DeSoto Trail Elementary

Challenging each student to blaze a successful trail to the future.

ESE Resource

ESE Resource

ESE Resource classes provide targeted support for students who qualify through an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Resource teachers collaborate with classroom teachers to help students succeed in the general education curriculum. Services are typically offered part-time in a pull-out setting and focus on individualized goals in areas such as reading, math, and social skills. Instructional strategies and interventions are tailored to each student’s needs as outlined in their IEP.

Lisa Merchant, K-2

Lisa Merchant

My name is Lisa Merchant, and I am proud to be part of the DeSoto Trail family. I was raised, lived, and worked most of my life in Holmes County, a small community about an hour and a half west of Tallahassee. Five years ago, I moved to Tallahassee and soon found my home at DeSoto Trail, where I have taught for the past two years. I graduated from the University of West Florida and have spent 32 years in education. I remain passionate about creating a supportive and engaging learning environment in which every child feels valued, encouraged, and capable of success. Helping students grow academically and socially continues to be the most rewarding part of my career. I truly can’t imagine doing anything else.

Outside the classroom, I enjoy going to the beach, spending time with my wonderful husband, and visiting with our two awesome adult children, Ethan and Erik. I also love playing with my little dog, Percy, who always keeps life fun. I’m grateful to be part of the Trailblazer community and l look forward to a wonderful year of learning and connection.

Megan Pfund, 3-5

Megan Pfund

With seven years of experience in education, I have had the privilege of supporting students in a variety of learning environments. I spent four years working as a paraprofessional and three years as an ESE (Exceptional Student Education) teacher. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education as well as certification to teach ESE for grades K–12.

I am passionate about creating a supportive, structured, and engaging classroom where students feel safe to take risks, build confidence, and grow academically and socially. One of my favorite parts of teaching is witnessing the “light bulb moment” — that spark of understanding when a child overcomes a challenge and realizes what they’re capable of. I believe in meeting students where they are, individualizing instruction, celebrating progress, and partnering closely with families to empower every learner.

Outside of the classroom, I’m married with two young children who keep life full of joy, curiosity, and plenty of teachable moments. My experiences as both an educator and a parent have strengthened my belief that every child can thrive when given patience, encouragement, and the right tools.

I am committed to fostering a positive learning environment, collaborating with colleagues, and continuing to grow as an educator to best serve my students.
